The Crumbling Pillar of Justice
Sadly, not a day passes without a new and frightening development in the actions of the US administration, directed by POTUS. The widening assault on the judicial pillar of power is the most worrying evolution of current events. The judicial system is the last hope of any reasonable check and balance - and that hope is fading as judges and legal firms retreat from challenges to Executive Orders rather than face sanction by the Criminal in Chief.
Trump appointed officials openly state that they "do not care what a judge says" (Tom Holman "Border Czar") and intend to do the bidding of the administration even if it is against the law. Although Holman is now under fire for making that statement and is backtracking to say - his comment only pertained to the immigration matter before the court - the defiance of judicial orders is a recurring event. It will continue.
Trump and his selection of stooges are waging a war on several fronts - with the demolition of the bureaucracy, the relationships with allies, with anyone and everything that has challenged him in the past. The onslaught will only continue as organizations and individuals melt away from standing up to him.
We know what Trump thinks about the law. His business practices, and his convictions in those practices, speak for themselves. Now he is attempting to usurp laws that were designed to uphold the fundamental tenants of a democratic system of government. Like all autocrats, the law is only a temporary barrier to be overcome or ignored - until it is changed to suit the autocrat's purpose. If POTUS thinks this way about his country's laws, the outcomes for his views on international laws will be the same. We have heard through a NY Times reporter that Trump thinks that the treaties that established our borders with the US will have no bearing on his pursuit of our territory or resources.
Consequently, if, even for a moment, we lose our resolve to counter these threats or fail to take aggressive action to strengthen our defenses - political, economic, commercial and strategic - we will be drawn rapidly into his vortex of reprisal and tyranny.
