The Desperation of Palestine and the Immoral Self-Interest of Leadership

The Canadian Government's consideration to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state is a good diplomatic strategy, in the realpolitik sense.  Canada does not have the ability to change the course of the war but it does, in league with other like minded States, alter the Israeli calculus that currently propels it toward full and complete occupation.

The total devastation in Palestine is front and centre of virtually every news outlet for all to see and now Israel and their leadership, hijacked by an extreme right insists that more devastation is necessary to bring Hamas to heel. On the periphery, emboldened and weapon laden settlers on the West Bank, gradually encroach on and seize Palestinian land.

How in the world are such horrific and unconscionable actions allowed to take place?

First, Trump, a convicted criminal, has Benjamin Netanyahu's back. Netanyahu has also been indicted for fraud, breach of trust and bribery. These men are cut from the same cloth. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_of_Benjamin_Netanyahu) Both of them have also waged war on their judiciary in the face of the system to prosecute them. Bibi, with Trump's implicit and sometimes explicit support soldiers on.

Second, Israel controls all the routes into and out of Palestine and the restrictions on news, not to mention aid within the country limits the ability of the UN as well as interested states to intervene. The intention to effect complete occupation will only exacerbate the devastation.

In the meantime, any individual or State calling out this travesty for what it is, is labeled as racist or worse - antisemite. Both men are hell bent on silencing their critics and without conscience pressing their agenda further.

Where Trump became President so he could avoid what he faced before the then balanced courts, Bibi also avoids further impeachments by prosecuting a continuing war on a suffering and desperate people.

Granted Hamas is a terrorist organization.  However, if prosecuting a war against an organization, government or otherwise, that purports to represent a people, has taught us anything, hearts and minds are not won by such actions. In fact, it simply has the opposite effect. Hamas continues to grow and recruit amidst the turmoil.

Trump and Netanyahu's self-interest trumps all common sense and morality.

More nations need to stand up and force the issue of recognizing Palestine as a springboard to alternative solutions to what has clearly become an unjust war.

We are in the throes of a very important Federal election and, as usual, the parties vying for power are flinging money around by the billion. From infrastructure for mining development, to the defense in the Arctic and higher pay for our armed forces personnel, to building a hundred thousand rent controlled houses, all the parties are making money laden promises of handouts or tax cuts to win our votes.  There is no question that we need investments in many, if not all of the things that are "promised". Zelensky's Gambit

It appears Volodymyr Zelensky's current strategy has three elements: 1. He has learned that he must show agreement with Donald Trump. To do otherwise simply risks rejection. 2. Securing a sensible agreement with Putin is not possible, which puts Trump and the US in a difficult position and will require, as it has shown, a need for some form of US support. It is now up to the US to achieve a win of some form - and Trump will need that to save face. 3. Ukraine is war weary and the unrelenting attacks from Russia will not stop until he (Zelensky) gives some ground. That ground will include for the time being, the Donbas.
